The Gastein Valley forms part of the huges Ski Amede ski pass offering 760 kilometers of slopes and make use of 270 lifts which are spread out throughout the top five regions of Salzburger Sportwelt, Schladming-Dachstein, Gastein, Hochkönig and Großarltal

Gastein is renowned for Spas – each resort has their own unique take on the spa experience with thermal waters helping to ease aching muscles after a day on the slopes. Dorfgastein is the smaller of the resorts and on eof the prettiest. Bad Hofgastein is a mix of quaint Austrian Alpine Chalets to modern glass covered buildings. Bad Gastein is the larger resort and known for the belle epoque hotels and villas built on its steep, forested slopes

The Skiing

The skiing is split over 4 ski areas. Sport Gastein at the head of the valley which is the highest point of the Ski Amade ski pass, Gaukogel then between Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein – Stubnerkogel and Schlossalm then the Dorfgastein Grossarl ski area.

Beginners will quickly gain the confidence on the nursery slops by the bubble lift In Bad GAstein to move up the mountain. A series of blue and green paths wind down from the top of Stubnerkogel back down to Bad Gastein.

For intermediate and advanced skiers with over 200kms of piste to tackle over the 4 ski areas Gastein offers a lot of varied terrain and interesting challenges.

Sportgastein is the highest ski area in the Gastein Valley with the top lift ending at 2686m. A series of reds and a couple of blacks essentially follow the falline back down to the mid and base station. Graukogel, while small with just 3 lifts extending up from Bad Gastein to 2492m provides for an interesting few hours. There are a couple of off piste itineraries and a couple of fast wide reds that end down at the base station. Most skiers head up Stubnerkogel and play on the slopes between Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein which are connected by fast bubble lifts and wide open red pistes that descent quickly into the trees.

Don’t forget to take the ski bus to Dorf Gastein. Fast chairs and bubble lifts link up with mainly red runs, a hand full of blues and some interesting blacks with Grossarl. Stop in one of the many bars on the way back down to Dorf Gastein in the afternoon for some Apres Ski.
