Absolutely Travel

Obertauern is one of the highest resorts in Austria and perhaps the nearest the Austrians have ever come to emulating a high altitude French ski resort! But rest assured Obertauren is a traditional Austria ski resort situated up at 1738m at the summit of the Radstadter Tauren Pass.

Apres ski is traditional Austria and gets going in the early afternoon. Up on the mountain Hochalm is very popular while down in the town Latsch'n Alm and Luzer Alm seem to throb the afternoon away!

Ski lifts and slopes fan out to the slopes either side of the village.

The Skiing

26 lifts open up over 100kms of marked piste. Well over 95% of the slopes are abopve the treeline. Beautiful mountain restaurants are dotted around the ski area.

Beginners

Beginners are a little spoilt for choice - there are 6 ski schools each with their own nursery slopes. Beginners will soon graduate to taking the larger faster lifts up the mountain to build confidence on the long blues from Gamskar. Take the blue 14a down to the Zehnerkarbahn then the beautiufl long 1a back down to Obertauren - remember to keep to the right and end up on the 14a otherwise its back to the Zehnerkarbahn

Intermediates

Intermediate skiers and boarders will enjoy the Super 7 Challenge - skiing the 7 highest points in the system on the longest pistes! it seems like the whole area has been designed for intermediate skiers, red and blue runs fan out from each lift. The lifts are all fast which means you get more time on your skis and less time riding up the mountain! Spemd a couple of hours on Zehnerkabahn - with a choice of 5 reds coming off the top blue 1a or up to the Panoramabahn - glorious views over Austria and one of the longest runs back down to the new Grumwaldkofbahn - a mix of chairlifts and bubbles!

Advanced

For sure advanced skiers and borders will ski out the pistes in 2 or 3 days, but don't let this put you off, there are some surprisingly steep blacks, 31 following the fall line from the top of Plattenkarbahn, or 2a from Schadbergbahn and 26a underneath Gamsleitenbahn all need a certain amount of resprect. There are wide open off piste areas and a number of desiginated off piste routes. The ski schools offer off piste guiding with full safety equipment.
