Our Favourite Costa Brava Beaches

Stretching from Barcelona in the south up to the border with France, Costa Brava has many faboulous beaches, from golden swaths of sand from Barcelona up to Calella to wonderful hidden coves on Cap de Creus in the north.

The Costa Brava Tourist organisation has a guide to all the beaches here, but handful of our favourite beaches are described below!

Es Castell, Palamos

Located to the east of Palamos, Platja de Castell is a wide sandy cove. There is parking (approx. 8€ per day or 5€ for the afternoon) 300m away from the beach. You can walk to the beach along the Cami de Ronda from Palamos.

Es Castell Palamos

Playa Illa Roja

In an idyllic setting among rocks and pine trees Plaja Illa Roja is well known for its clear waters and the reddish rocky island that looks over it which gives the beach its name, - Red Island. It is genially a quiet, uncrowded spot with coarse golden sand. The only way there is via a lovely path along the coast.

The beach is under a cliff that divides it into two. It's 150 metres long, depending on the tide, which can connect the rocky island by land or leave it ‘floating’ in the sea. It is completely surrounded by high rock walls and vegetation an so Illa Roja gets fewer hours of sunshine than other beaches in the area – such as the big sandy space occupied by Pals Bay – which means by mid-afternoon the beach is practically in shade. This won't pose a problem as long as you keep in mind that there are other charming beaches nearby, including Sa Riera, Platja del Raco, and, a little farther away, Aiguafreda and Sa Tuna.

Playa Illa Roja Begur

Cala Aiguablava, Begur

Perhaps one of the most beautiful coves on the Costa Brava and in the height of the summer it does get busy. There is a car park just a few meters up from the beach. There are a couple of beach restaurants, ice cream shop and water sports rental - canoes, paddle boards, sailing and power boats.

There are caves and cliffs to explore from the water and the cove is relatively shallow

Cala Aiguablava

Sa Tuna, Begur

Follow the winding road down from Begur to the coast, Sa Tuna is a beautiful bay with white washed buildings either side. The beach is course sand which gently shelves into the sea. The cove is shallow with some cliffs and caves to explore.

Cala del Senyor Ramon

Located off the spectacular road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guixols, Cala Senyor Ramon is a wonderful wild sandy beach. There is parking down a rough track by a restaurant (10€ for the day) or free parking at the top of the track off the main road. The walk is around 1 km fromt he road or 200m from the restaurant parking.

The beach is always quite quiet with plenty of space. The beach shelves steeply into to the sea. There are some small rocky islands to swim out to.
