The Costa Dorada is a wonderful stretch of Mediterranean coastline in Spain's southern Catalonia region - southwest of Barcelona. Resorts and beaches line the coast. The area is known for its calm, shallow waters, wide golden sandy beaches and hidden coves. Tarragona is the regions main city.
South of Reus, Salou is a resort town with wide beaches, small coves and the Torre Vella, a 16th-century tower. The vast PortAventura theme park is just to the north of Salou. West of Salou is Cambrils, a harbor village with numerous sheltered beaches and coves. Altafulla is a seaside town east of Tarragona. It is a medieval walled town with an 11th-century Montserrat Abbey. Farther east is the resort town of Calafell, which has the imposing hilltop Santa Creu Castle and a reconstructed Iberian citadel believed to be from around the 3rd century B.C.
