Palma situated in southern Mallorca is the capital of the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca. Palma is dominated by the massive Santa María cathedral, a Gothic landmark begun in the 13th century, overlooks the Bay of Palma. Next to the cathedral is Almudaina which is a Moorish-style Arab fortress converted to a royal residence. West of the city, hilltop Bellver Castle is a medieval fortress with a distinctive circular shape. Wander through the cobbled streets, stopping in one of the many bars, restaurants and coffee shops. Visit the huge aquarium or why not cool off in one of the waterparks?

Palma makse a perfect base to explore Mallorca and visit some of the beautiful beaches this island has to offer. Car rental is quick and relatively good value to organise, buses depart from the central bus station to all parts of the island or take the magnificent train to Soller. The train leaves from its own station in Palma and takes an hour to reach Soller's Art Deco station (with art gallery), stopping at Bunyola on the way. The journey soon takes you through spectacular scenery, involving viaducts, bridges, and 13 tunnels. A tram from Soller takes you down to the Port and beaches
