Glencoe

Glencoe is Scotland's original ski area with the first lift being opened in the 1950s. Located just on Rannoch Moor just off the A82 Glencoe is perhaps our favourite ski area in the UK with just 8 lifts the area offers something for everyone from complete beginner to advanced skiers and boarders.

Glasgow is just over 1 1/2 hours away though there are plenety of hotels, bed and breakfast, cabins and other accommodation within a comfortable 15 to 20 minute drive of the Glencoe Mountain Resort. There are also micro lodges, showers, drying room and a fully licensed cafe at the base station which make Glencoe the only Scottish ski area with onsite accommodation.

The Skiing

The double chairlift rises up to 650m to the plateau. The Plateau is reputed to be one of Scotland's finest nursery areas - perfect for learing to ski with gentle green runs being served by 3 drag tows and a chairlift.

For beginners Glencoe operate an excellent ski school with group lessons starting at 10.30 and / or 13.30 every day.

Fromt he top of the Access Chairlift the Plateau Poms access the Cliffhanger Chairlift and Wall T bar tow. From the top of these two drag towns you can ski back down towards the Plateau on a choice of green, blue, red or a short steep black through the 'Canyon' or access the top third of the mountain on the Rannoch button tow or the Main Basin T bar.

From the summit - bare right for some glorious blue runs which either drop back tot he bottom of the two top lifts or if you end up on Etive Glades back down to the Plateau. For us the fun really begins as you head off to the left from the top of the two summit lifts exploring the two red runs Rannoch Glades and The Spring Run and for the more adventurous the UK's steepest piste - a black run called The Fly Paper.

When snow conditions allow the three runs under the Acess Chairlift back down to the main carpark are well worth exloring and not just left to the end of the day - there is a choice of a blue and redto the right of the chair as you slide down the mountain and a direct black run to the left.

There is a cafe on the Plateau as well as the fully licensed cafe at the base station.
