Scotland has 5 ski areas; Glencoe and Nevis Range in the Western Highlands, Cairngorm near Aviemore which is pretty much in the central, Glenshee and The Lecht in the Eastern Highlands.

On a good day skiing in Scotland can rival the Alps – there are pisted runs for all abilities and some great off piste areas. But be prepared and be flexible. There is no accommodation by any of the ski areas so in reality you have to use a car to access the ski areas. As such we recommend that you stay somewhere central so you can check the weather forecast and then decide which area to go an ski on that particular day. The weather and resort conditions are updated every frew hours at www.snow-forecast.com. Perth for example is about as central as it gets to stay - just over 1 hour from Glenshee, 2 hours from Cairngorm, The Lecht and Glencoe and 2 ½ to Nevis Range.

 

Planning your Trip

Early booking for the holiday periods – February Half Term in particular is essential. Otherwise be prepared to check the weather forecast and snow conditions and travel at the last minute. Getting There

There are flights into Inverness (for Glenshee, Lecht and Cairngorm) as well as to Glasgow and Edinburgh then hire a car.

For Cairngorm you can take the train to Aviemore and use the ski bus to access the ski area each day. For Nevis Range you can take the westcoast train up to Fort William and use the regular daily bus from Fort William to Nevis Range. The Caladonia Sleeper is reputed to be one of the best rail journey's in the world. Board you train at London 9pm and arrivie to Fort William or Aviemore 12 hours later at 9am - see https://www.sleeper.scot/  

 

By Car – simply pile all your gear in to your car and drive up! Be prepared for winter conditions and take regular breaks. Even if you have a 4x4 we recommend that you consider buying a set of winter tyres or as a minimum a set of winter snowsocks or snow chains.
